The debate, to have been broadcast statewide, would have capped the all-day economic development summit that starts at 9:30 a.m. in Heth Hall. The summit will follow the annual membership meeting of the New River Valley Alliance at 7:30 a.m. in Muse Hall.
"We're extremely saddened by the fact that they will not be here," Alliance President Gary Weddle said Wednesday. "At this point, we're just going to use the Ramble as the end of the summit."
Summit participants have been invited to visit the second annual New River Ramble, a regional business and industry social event, being held in Radford on the same day.
Weddle said that Allen had a conflict with another potential engagement at Virginia Beach, but had agreed to come to the New River Valley if Terry agreed to debate.
The latest word from the Terry camp was that the visit was still being considered, Weddle said, but the Allen people could wait no longer to give the Virginia Beach group a yes or no.
"Obviously, we'd like to have Mary Sue Terry come to the summit and be in the New River Valley for the Ramble," Weddle said.
The summit will feature speakers from educational institutions, utilities, economic development agencies, the political area, business and industry. The summit registration fee is $25. Further information is available by calling 674-3636.
