NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS LARRY W. GARLAND, son of George V. Garland of 3487 Brookrun Drive, became a "plank owner" aboard the ballistic submarine USS Nebraska when it was commissioned recently.

In naval tradition, the title "plank owner" is given to those original crew members who are on board a ship when it is commissioned.

\ NAVY SEAMAN BRYAN J. MOSHER, son of Clara L. Whitlock of 2813 Avenel, recently returned from a two-month Australian deployment aboard the guided missile frigate USS Thach.

Mosher is a 1990 graduate of Northside High School.

\ MARINE PFC. JAMES D. JACHIMSKI, son of James D. Jachimski of 35310 Poff Lane, recently completed recruit training.

Jachimski is a 1992 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS TIMOTHY M. GRISSO, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett I. Grisso of 5475 Glenmary Drive, has departed for a six-month Mediterranean Sea deployment aboard the USS Thorn, based in Charleston. Grisso is a 1981 graduate of Salem High School.

\ MARINE CPL. ZACHARY C. BOWER, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Bower of 345 Parkview Drive, has returned from a six-month Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean deployment aboard a USS Wasp Central Command Amphibious Ready Group ship.

Bower is a 1990 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.
