EX-WAKE STAR DIES OF CANCER

Jim Staton, a standout lineman at Wake Forest who played in the NFL and CFL after World War II, died of cancer at age 66.

Staton returned from a tour of duty with the Navy Seabees in 1946 as a 6-foot-4, 250-pounder and led Greensboro High School to a state championship.

Staton chose to play football at Wake Forest despite being drafted by the Boston Red Sox, and was a two-way standout in 1950. Staton played for the Washington Redskins in 1951 before going to the CFL, where he was a five-time All-CFL selection.
