HIDDEN VALLEY SEEKS ANOTHER CLUB TITLE

Salem's Hidden Valley Country Club will attempt to defend its title today and Saturday in the VSGA Club Championship at Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook.

Twenty-eight four-man teams representing clubs from around the state will compete. Scoring is based on the low three scores of a club's four-player team each day.

Hidden Valley will be represented by Greg Caldwell, Bill Proffitt, Harry Fridge and Jack Allara.

Other area clubs competing include: Roanoke Country Club (Jeff Mackey, Andy Berry, Jeff Lynch and John Priest); Waterfront (Dan Shervey, Ray Corron, Al Persinger, Bill Potter); Chatmoss (Roger Hornsby, Bob Becker, Keith Decker, Billy Cross); Lexington (David Brogan, J.W. Entsminger, Alex Macheras, Lee Faulkner); and Water's Edge (Jim White, Floyd Merryman, Jack Trussell, Ron Willard II).

Senior Ryan Ketron fired a 3-under-par 68 at Lexington Country Club to propel 1992 Group AA state champion William Byrd back into the overall lead after five rounds of the Blue Ridge District regular-season tournament.

The Terriers, who trailed Northside by nine shots after four rounds, will take an eight-shot lead on the Vikings into Tuesday's sixth and final round at Blue Hills. Lord Botetourt stands third, 23 shots back.

Ketron, who has a 1-over 355 total for five rounds, leads the individual chase by 25 shots over Lord Botetourt's Scott Griffin. Northside's Brian Agee is third, 26 back.
