7 CHARGED IN APRIL 30 BREAK-IN

City police have charged six men who are students at Radford University and a seventh man who accompanied them April 30 with breaking and entering an apartment where two other students allegedly were assaulted.

Nathaniel R. Reed III, 23, and Todd E. Romer, 20, were charged last spring with breaking and entering and two counts of assault and battery in the incident, said Maj. Jonny Butler.

The arrests came after investigation of a complaint that the men had forced their way into an apartment April 30 at about 1 a.m. demanding to know where a young woman was.

Reed and Romer were physically removed from the apartment by Brad Hutchinson, but they returned about an hour later with five companions, Butler said. The men are accused of kicking in a locked bedroom door and assaulting Hutchinson and Tasha Draskovic.

The five other men were charged Sept. 11 with breaking and entering. They are: Steve L. May, 21; James C. "Shane" Yerkes, 20; Brett E. Candler, 22; Jeff D. Johnson, 21; and Rodrigo H. Del Cerro, 19.

All but Yerkes are Radford University students.

The seven are free on bond, and an Oct. 4 court date has been set.

Deborah Brown, Radford University spokeswoman, said campus judicial charges also are pending. While the men charged belonged to a fraternity, Brown said, the incident is considered an individual action and not fraternity-related.
