`OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY' OPENS AT BARTER

"Other People's Money," Jerry Sterner's high-momentum play about five people caught in a corporate takeover, opened Wednesday at Barter Theatre to run through Oct. 9.

The cast features Kingsport native Ann Buckles, whose work has included Broadway plays; television veteran Addison Powell, and North Carolina theater favorite David Lenthall.

Powell plays the board chairman of a company that is the main employer in an Eastern city and is targeted for a takeover. Buckles plays his longtime associate and Monique Fowler plays her daughter, a lawyer. Neville Aurelius plays the company president and Lenthall is the Wall Street takeover artist.

Michael Medeiros, who recently appeared in "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair DeLune" at Barter Playhouse, is directing the play.

The play pits traditions against trends in American industry. Characters fight their own personal battles. Relationships among family, friends, co-workers and lovers are tested.

"American industry has changed so much in the last 20 years and we can see more changes coming - the ills of the auto industry, Japanese technology, military production cutbacks, international trading. It's all so complicated," said Richard Rose, Barter's artistic director. "The beauty of `Other People's Money' is how it zeroes in on the people, individually and as residents of communities that are devastated when major industries are bought and sold."
