PROFESSOR NAMED TO HEAD CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION

President Clinton announced his appointment of Mary Frances Berry, a University of Pennsylvania history professor, to head the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on Friday. A longtime member of the panel, she is the first woman appointed to lead the commission.

Clinton called her "a civil rights scholar as well as an advocate." She also was a leading critic of Clinton's decision to abandon the nomination of Lani Guinier as head of the Justice Department's civil rights division. - Associated Press
