RADFORD, PULASKI COUNTY PLAN INDUSTRY SHOWCASE

Representatives of over two dozen businesses and industries will be on hand\ Thursday as Radford and Pulaski County sponsor their first Industry Showcase.

Open to the public, the showcase will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the former Magic Mart building, U.S. 11 and Virginia 114.

An invitation-only reception Wednesday, 5-8 p.m. at the Magic Mart Building will kick off the showcase.

Area companies scheduled to have displays include Kollmorgen-Inland Motors, Hercules Inc., Radva Corp., Long-Airdox, Magnox, Volvo GM, Pulaski Furniture and Electro Plate-Rite.

Among other activities, an open house at the newly completed shell building in the Radford Industrial Center will be held Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A golf tournament is set for Wednesday at Draper Valley Golf Club.

Jill Barr, Radford's Economic Development Director said the showcase and other events are designed help make the public more aware of existing industries.

"We want to create as many opportunities for [industries] to network and to get exposure as we can," she said.

At its last meeting, Radford City Council proclaimed the week as Industry Appreciation Week, and noted that over 80 percent of all new jobs are created by existing industries.

Pulaski's assistant county administrator, Pete Huber, said he hoped Thursday's showcase will lead to "a better understanding and appreciation" of Pulaski County and Radford firms.

The capstone social event, the second annual New River Ramble, will follow an economic summit at Heth Hall on the Radford University campus. New River Community College President Edward Barnes will be among those addressing the day-long gathering of economic development officials, which starts at 9 a.m.

The New River Ramble gets underway at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Long Way Home amphitheater, on Wilderness Road off First Street, about a quarter-mile from Exit 105 off Interstate 81.

On the menu will be pit-cooked barbecue and catfish. The event, sponsored by the city and county chambers of commerce, also will feature live entertainment.

Tickets are $18 and available only in advance by calling 639-2202 or 980-1991.

On Friday, an Economic Bridges "pipeline" tour of the New River Valley will provide a chance for Northern Viriginia businesses to connect with those in Southwest Virginia. The group also will visit the Industry Showcase. A legislative tour also is scheduled.
