MARTINSVILLE WHIPS MAGNA VISTA 77-60

Martinsville took charge down the stretch, scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter to beat Magna Vista 77-60 on Thursday night in a Piedmont District girls' basketball game.

Senior forward Keenya Hairston led Martinsville (3-2, 3-1) with 22 points, and Samantha Ferguson added 19. The Bulldogs led 52-47 after three quarters, then broke open the game with the high-scoring final period.

Magna Vista (6-1, 3-1), Timesland's sixth-ranked team, was led by Kathleen Speakman with 14 points. \

Laurel Park 82, Dan River 30: In Ringgold, Tanesha Hairston scored 17 points as the Lancers got points from 11 players in a Piedmont District victory over the Wildcats. Laurel Park is 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the district. \

Alleghany 51, Covington 32: In Covington, the Mountaineers won for the fourth time in five games, beating the hosts in a non-district game.

Celeste Godrey led the way with 15 points, and Tricia Rice added nine points. Bessie Laws led Covington (0-4) with 11 points. \

Bath County 45, Rockbridge County 40: In Lexington, Sarah Dooley missed a potential tying three-point basket with 15 seconds left, and the Chargers went on to defeat the Wildcats in the non-district matchup.

Jenny Deeds led Bath County with 11 points. \

Liberty 57, Jefferson Forest 36: In Forest, the Minettes capitalized on nine Cavaliers turnovers in the fourth quarter to outscore Jefferson Forest 22-3 and win their Seminole District matchup.

Amy Baxter scored 14 points for Liberty (4-2), Felicia Miller added 13 and Sue Lynn Cowlbuck scored eight and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Jefferson Forest is 1-4. \

Staunton River 57, Buckingham County 38: In Buckingham, Tanya Nelms fired in 21 points, including two 3-point goals, as the Golden Eagles walloped the Knights to remain the lone unbeaten Seminole District team.

Staunton River (4-0, 4-0) also got 14 points from junior guard Deena Mitchell.

Buckingham County (0-8, 0-8) was led by Marquita Baker with 17 points.

\ Grayson County 53, Bland 40: In Bland, the Blue Devils took advantage of the Rockets' foul trouble to outscore Bland 25-5 in the fourth quarter and come away with a Mountain Empire District victory.

Five Rockets fouled out in the final period as Grayson County rallied from a seven-point deficit. Shelly Osborne led the Blue Devils (1-3, 1-3) with 27 points.

Bland is 0-4, 0-4. \

Bassett 72, Chatham 62: In Bassett, the Bengals, ranked No. 1 in Timesland, had no trouble cruising to the Piedmont District victory.

Bassett (5-0, 4-0) got 20 points from Aimee Barker and 19 from Lori Wimbush. Chatham's Jion Word had a game-high 35 points, including five 3-point goals. \
