ALLEGHANY HOLDS OFF RADFORD

Radford made a fourth-quarter rally, but host Alleghany held on to win 32-30 in a battle of explosive offenses in a non-district matchup.

The win was not without a price, however. Alleghany quarterback David Dixon left the game in the second quarter and may have broken a leg.

Radford trailed 32-16 in the final period and cut Alleghany's lead to two points behind two Larnelle Lewis touchdown runs. Lewis ran also ran for a 43-yard touchdown earlier in the game.

The Bobcats are 1-2, and Alleghany is 3-0.

\ Liberty 9

Buckingham 7

BUCKINGHAM - The Bees missed two fourth-quarter field-goal attempts as the Minutemen held on for a Seminole District win.

Johnny Cash kicked a 20-yard field goal to give Liberty (2-1 overall, 2-1 district) an early lead when the Bees fumbled in the first quarter. Jack Padgett scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run as the Minutemen to a 9-0 lead.

Buckingham scored on its next drive but lost its chance for victory with the missed field goals. \

Patrick County 32

Fieldale-Collinsville 0

STUART - Charles McClain rushed 13 times for 229 yards and four touchdowns as the Cougars thrashed the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District matchup. The game was called with 7:36 left in the third quarter because of rain.

Patrick County (2-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and amassed 18 points in the second to put the game away. McClain's had touchdown runs of 30, 4 and 87 yards before halftime.

The Cougars racked up 366 total yards, 297 on the ground and 67 in the air, while holding the Cavaliers (0-2, 0-1) to a 106-yard total. \

Rural Retreat 7

Fort Chiswell 0

FORT CHISWELL - Kevin Burton's 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the extent of the scoring in the non-district game dominated by the defenses.

Fort Chiswell (1-2) threatened in the third quarter, driving to the Rural Retreat 1 before turning it over on downs.

Rural Retreat is 3-0. \

Chatham 13

CHATHAM - Mcquail Gravely knows it's better to receive than to give - the football that is.

The senior wide receiver caught six passes for 140 yards, including three touchdowns, as the Bulldogs defeated host Chatham (1-1, 0-1) in a Piedmont District opener for both teams.

Martinsville (2-0, 1-0) scored all the second-half points. \

Tunstall 22

Bassett 12

DRY FORK - Kris Law's 2-yard run in the third quarter put the Trojans ahead, and they held on for the Piedmont District win over the Bengals.

Bassett (2-0, 0-1) led 12-8 before Law's score. Tunstall (2-0, 1-0) tacked on an fourth-quarter touchdown on Ryan Scolpini's 1-yard run. \

Grayson County 28

Shawsville 0

INDEPENDENCE - The unbeaten Blue Devils capitalized on eight turnovers by the Shawnees, three of which set up touchdowns, to score the Mountain Empire District win.

Shawsville (0-2, 0-2) outgained Grayson County (3-0, 2-0) by 50 yards - 180-130 - but couldn't overcome its multitude of miscues.

Bobby Cheeks scored twice for Grayson County on runs of 2 and 3 yards. Chip Pack scored on a 1-yard burst, and the other Shawsville touchdown came courtesy of Keith Johnson's 75-yard kickoff return that opened the second half.

Quarterback Darrell Bibb rushed 13 times for 95 yards for the Shawnees.

Craig County 6

BLAND - Monty Matthews accounted for all of the Bears' points in a non-district victory over the visiting Rockets.

The junior wide receiver caught a 21-yard pass from David Lambert for a touchdown and kicked the extra point in the second quarter, then he added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Kristopher Peters scored Craig County's touchdown on a 15-yard interception return in the third quarter that pulled the Rockets to 7-6. The conversion attempt failed.

Joe Cromer rushed for 92 yards on 10 carries for the Bears (2-2), who had 201 rushing yards and 32 passing.

For Craig County, Johnny Crawford had 72 yards rushing. Craig County (0-3) had 186 rushing yards and 47 passing. The Rockets were held to 51 yards offense in the second half. \

Laurel Park 42

Dan River 6

MARTINSVILLE - Sullivan Paddyfote rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns as the Lancers hammered the Wildcats in a Piedmont District game.

Laurel Park (2-0, 1-0) struck early and often, scoring 20 points in the first quarter. Paddyfote scored on 68 and 37-yard runs and Ira Martin ran 10 yards for another.

The Lancers finished with 262 yards rushing while holding Dan River (1-1, 0-1) to 37.

The Wildcats' points came in the third quarter when Erick Ferguson connected with Corey Farmer on an 18-yard pass.

Laurel Park's DeShannon Adams, who finished with 110 yards rushing on 11 attempts, scored on a 36-yard run in the third quarter. Mike Hairston capped the scoring by returning a fumble 70 yards in the fourth quarter.

Riverheads 0

GREENVILLE - D.J. Douglass rambled for 124 yards on 17 carries and the Fighting Blues' defense held the hosts to only 102 total yards in scoring the non-district shutout.

Craig Floyd, who ran for 56 of Parry McCluer's 260 yards on the ground, scored on runs of 22 and 1 yards. John Wheeler notched the other Fighting Blues' score on a 6-yard run.

Parry McCluer is 2-1; Riverheads is 1-1. \

Magna Vista 43

Gretna 0

RIDGEWAY - Magna Vista stormed to a 29-0 halftime lead, and the defense did the rest as the host Warriors rolled in the Piedmont District opener for both teams.

Evan Penn ran for 114 yards and scored a touchdown, and Lewis Hairston ran for two touchdowns to lead Magna Vista (2-0, 1-0).

Gretna (0-2, 0-1) was held to 56 yards rushing, and 37 yards passing.
