GOLF-GILES' CLUB SETS PACE IN VSGA EVENT

Seven-time State Amateur champion Vinny Giles of Richmond fired the day's low round - a 3-under-par 69 - to help lead Hermitage Country Club of Richmond into a commanding lead through the first round of the VSGA Club Championship at Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook.

Hermitage's team total of 2-under 214 leads second-place Boonsboro Country Club of Lynchburg by 12 shots heading into today's final round.

Forest Park Country Club of Martinsville, paced by Keith Decker's 71, is third at 228. Area entries Lexington Golf Club (235), defending champion Hidden Valley (240), Roanoke Country Club (244) and Waterfront (263) are well back in the 28-team field.

Hanging Rock teaching pro Chip Sullivan and Blue Hills head pro Billy King will be among the favorites in the professional division for the sixth Tee To Green Open men's golf tournament, which starts today at London Downs Golf Club in Forest.

Other threats in the pro field include host pros Jerry Conner and Tracy Newman and former Roanoke Country Club assistant Kevin Wilmouth of Appomattox.

Non-club pros Dicky Linkous and David Tolley of Roanoke were denied entry in the field because of a Middle Atlantic PGA rule that prohibits sectional non-members from playing in a tournament including 10 or more PGA sectional members.
