FLEMING HOLDS OFF HALIFAX COUNTY 20-14

William Fleming barely escaped with a high school football victory Friday night, edging host Halifax County 20-14 in a non-district game.

With the Colonels leading 20-14 with eight minutes remaining, William Fleming running back Eddie Jones fumbled on Halifax County's 11-yard line. The Comets recovered, and on first down Halifax County running back Detrius Medley ran for 86-yards to Fleming's 3-yard line.

The Colonels defense held, however, stopping Halifax County (0-3) with a goal-line stand that ended at the 1-yard line.

Fleming (2-1) took a 20-7 lead in the third when Mike Souma scored on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Al Holland Jr.

Halifax County came back in the fourth quarter when Medley scored on a 33-yard touchdown run. He rushed for 207 yards.

Jones ran for two touchdowns and 98 yards for Fleming. \

E.C. Glass' wishbone offense finally had a big night as the visiting Hilltoppers (1-2) broke a two-game losing streak in a non-district victory over the Knights. Glass got 187 yards rushing from Jesse Calloway as the Hilltoppers rolled up 430 yards total offense.

Jamane Abbitt scored two touchdowns for Glass on a 17-yard run in the second quarter and on a 46-yard tochdown pass from sophomore quarterback Andre Kendrick. The Knights (0-2) had 117 yards total offense. \

Randolph-Henry 50

Roanoke Catholic 14

CHARLOTTE COURT - Randolph-Henry's defense held Roanoke Catholic (2-2) to 114 total yards as the host team overpowered the Celtics in a non-conference game.

Roanoke Catholic's top two quarterbacks, Mike Kolnok and Tony Joyce, left by halftime with injuries, and Randolph-Henry (2-0) capitalized to lead 35-0. Catholic tailback P.J. Moyer, averaging 132 yards, was held to 52 yards.

BLAND - Junior wide receiver Monty Matthews accounted for all of the Bears' points in a non-district victory over the visiting Rockets. He caught a 21-yard pass from David Lambert for a touchdown and kicked the extra point in the second quarter, then he added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The Bears are 2-2.

Kristopher Peters scored Craig County's touchdown on a 15-yard interception return in the third quarter. Craig County is 0-3. \

North Cross 37

Fishburne Military 8

Junior running back Montrice Smith ran for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Raiders in the Virginia Independent Conference rout.

North Cross (2-0, 1-0) broke open a scoreless game with 30 points in the second and third quarters. Smith scored on a 92-yard run and caught a 48-yard touchdown pass. Marcus Cardwell also scored twice for the Raiders. \

Buckingham 7

BUCKINGHAM - The Bees missed two fourth-quarter field-goal attempts as the Minutemen held on for a Seminole District win.

Johnny Cash kicked a 20-yard field goal to give Liberty (2-1, 2-1) the lead when the Bees fumbled in the first quarter. Jack Padgett scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run as the Minutemen to a 9-0 lead. \
