MCCOMAS HAVING SURGERY FOR DIAGNOSIS

Virginia Tech President James McComas is undergoing diagnostic surgery for an undisclosed illness at an out-of-state medical center.

University officials did not disclose the location of the hospital and said they do not know the nature of McComas' illness.

He left Blacksburg Tuesday for the surgery.

McComas has felt ill for the past several weeks, university officials acknowledged.

He missed a major meeting of the state's university presidents last Friday to discuss proposed budget cuts to higher education, sending Tech Vice President Minnis Ridenour in his place.

Darrel Martin, a special assistant to McComas, said, "The university will certainly make additional information available to the internal campus community and to the public when the complete diagnosis and treatment plan become available."
