SOCCER-WOLFPACK SLIPS BY CAVALIERS 1-0

Ninth-ranked North Carolina State edged host Virginia 1-0 in a key ACC women's matchup on Saturday. Kim Yankowski scored with less than four minutes remaining to give the Wolfpack (4-1) the victory. It was a defensive matchup, with both N.C. State and UVa, ranked 10th in the nation, shooting on goal only seven times each. The next game for UVa (2-2) is Tuesday at James Madison University.

Washington and Lee's men's team remained winless after losing 3-0 to visiting Frostburg State in the opening round of the Washington and Lee Soccer Classic. Anthony Mazzarelli had 10 saves for the Generals (0-3).

In Westminster, Md., freshman Jennifer Grant had a goal and an assist to lead Washington and Lee to a 4-0 non-conference win over Western Maryland. The Generals (3-1) raced to a 3-0 halftime lead.

Ben Hayes scored an unassisted goal in overtime as Davidson (3-2, 1-0) edged host VMI 2-1 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams. Mike Young scored for the Keydets (2-5, 0-1) in the first half.

Eric Rarus scored the only goal as North Carolina Wesleyan beat host Ferrum 1-0 in a Dixie Conference soccer game. Stevie Reynolds had 13 saves for Ferrum (1-3, 0-1). Wesleyan is 3-3 and 1-0.
