SOCCER-WOLFPACK SLIPS BY CAVALIERS 1-0

Ninth-ranked North Carolina State edged host Virginia 1-0 in a key ACC women's matchup on Saturday. Kim Yankowski scored with less than four minutes remaining to give the Wolfpack (4-1) the victory. It was a defensive matchup, with both N.C. State and UVa (2-2), ranked 10th in the nation, shooting on goal only seven times each.

Melissa Belrose knocked in two goals as host Radford beat Louisville 3-1 in a non-conference game. A win by Radford (4-0) in Tuesday's Big South Conference home match against Liberty would equal the Highlanders' best start ever.

At Blacksburg, visiting Detroit-Mercy whipped Virginia Tech 4-0 in a non-conference women's game. Tech (4-1) was outshot 31-11.

At Radford, Shawn Mahoney scored a first-half goal as UNC Greensboro (4-1 overall, 3-0 Big South) kept Radford winless in a Big South Conference men's game. The Highlanders (0-7, 0-1) have been outscored 22-1 this season.

Roanoke College scored three goals after regulation and ripped Eastern Mennonite in overtime 4-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's match. Todd Haolauer scored the first overtime goal for Roanoke (5-1, 2-0), and Dustin Fonder and Mike Christopher added goals.

In Trenton, N.J., Trenton State, the third-ranked women's team in Division III, beat Roanoke College 2-0 in the Adidas Soccer Classic. Heather Harlan had 15 saves for Roanoke (0-3).

Ben Hayes scored an unassisted goal in overtime as Davidson (3-2, 1-0) edged host VMI 2-1 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams. Mike Young scored for the Keydets (2-5, 0-1) in the first half.

Eric Rarus scored the only goal as North Carolina Wesleyan (3-3, 1-0) beat host Ferrum 1-0 in a Dixie Conference men's game. Stevie Reynolds had 13 saves for Ferrum (1-3, 0-1).
