FLORIDA BOWLER LEADS QUALIFYING

Sam Zurich of Melbourne, Fla., was the top qualifier Saturday in the 10th Coca-Cola Classic Professional Bowlers' Association Southern Regional Open at the Vinton Bowling Center.

Zurich, who bowled a 288, was one of 144 competitors trying to make the 16-man cut for today's action. Tommy Holmes of Virginia Beach qualified second with a 281, and Guppy Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., was third with a 238. Roanoke's Richard Casey tied for the 13th qualifying spot.

The 16 remaining bowlers begin action at 8 a.m. today, and the field will be cut to five in the afternoon. The five-man roll-off begins at 3:30 p.m., and the winner will receive $3,000. - Staff report
