GIFT TO UMW OUTRAGES FAMILY

The family of a slain construction worker said it is outraged over a $4,000 Mingo County Commission contribution to a coal miners' strike relief fund.

Eddie York, 37, was shot to death on July 22 as he and another nonunion worker crossed a United Mine Workers picket line at a Logan County coal mine targeted by an ongoing UMW strike.

No arrests have been made, but state police have said they are investigating the possibility that the fatal bullet was fired by a UMW picket at the Arch of West Virginia Inc. mine.

Talks continue in Washington, D.C., toward settling the 4 1/2-month-long strike between the UMW and the Bituminous Coal Operators Association. - Associated Press
