TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Carolyn Burnett refers to her fifth-grade reading and social studies pupils as "co-workers." "I learn as much from them as they do from me," she said. "I learn from their problem-solving, their creativity; they think of things I've never thought of."

Burnett, a 20-year educator, says she sees her pupils as friends first. "I enjoy their friendship. They're all different, and I care about each one of them."

Apparently, that caring comes through. "Mrs. Burnett makes and gives us thing on holidays. She is kind and caring," said the pupil who nominated her.

Burnett, who has taught kindergarten, fourth and seventh grades, says she loves teaching fifth-graders because "they still think their teacher is special."

Married, she likes to read, make jewelry and travel. She also loves animals and is active in the Franklin County Humane Society.

If you have a nomination for Teacher of the Week, send the name of the nominee, his or her school and why you think that teacher should be honored. Include your name, telephone number and school and send to NewsFun, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010-2491. The Science Museum of Western Virginia will award each Teacher of the Week a gift certificate for $50 to be spent at the museum's Teacher Resource Center.
