7 BECOME NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS

Seven New River Valley students are semifinalists in the 1994 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. These seniors are among the top scorers in the state on the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

They have also been endorsed and recommended by their school's principals and have been evaluated for participation and leadership in school and community activities.

More than 1 million students from 19,000 high schools in the country entered the 1994 Merit Program, and the semifinalists represent the top half of 1 percent of Virginia 1994 high school graduating classes.

Blacksburg High School's semifinalists are TRISTAN CAROLAN, KOREN DONAHUE, ADAM JORTNER, CHRISTOPHER TYSON and JONATHAN TZE. JARED ESPLEY from Christiansburg High School and PHYLLIS LEARY of Pulaski County High School also qualified to compete in nationally for a share in the $25 million and more than 6,000 Merit Scholarships.

\ CHRISTIANSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL is holding an open forum on "Physical Education and the Middle School Child" tonight from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

A school open house will held 7-9 p.m. the same evening, beginning with the installation of PTA officers and introduction of the school staff in the cafeteria. Parents and students are encouraged to come and visit with the teachers.

The New River Valley chapter of the COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN will hold its quarterly meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. in room 302 of the Squires Student Center at Virginia Tech. For more information, call Deana Peterson at 231-5925 or Trish Muldoon at 921-1421 extension 21.

The MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL OF PARENT TEACHERS ASSOCIATIONS, an organization of representatives from each county school PTA, will meet on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Christiansburg High School.

\ INDIAN VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S Parent Teachers Association is holding a Heritage Fest on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school grounds. Games, food, clogging, flatfooting, pony rides, craft demonstrations, storytelling and other events are planned.

An Open House at SHAWSVILLE HIGH AND MIDDLE schools will be held on Monday at 7 p.m., following a 6:30 p.m. Parent Teacher Student Association meeting. Parents and students are welcome to visit with teachers, principals and members of the association. Refreshments will be served in the high school library.

Sharing resources and information is the purpose of the LEARNING DISABILITIES PARENT SUPPORT GROUP meeting on Sept. 29. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Parent Resource Center at 404 Wilson Ave. in Blacksburg. Call 382-5194 for more information.

Parents of HARDING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL pupils can meet with teachers and talk about the curriculum and classroom activities at these meetings:

First grade, Sept. 30, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Second grade, Thursday, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Third grade, Thursday, 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Fourth grade, Wednesday, 6:30-7:45 p.m.

Fifth grade, Sept. 28, 6:30-7:45 p.m.

\ SCHOOL OPERATING BUDGETS for 1994-95 will be the main topic of conversation at public hearings scheduled by the Montgomery County School Board. Other issues to be addressed include the closing or consolidation of community canneries. Citizens may sign up in advance to address the board or register to speak the night of the meeting. All meetings begin at 7:30 p.m.

\ SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAMS has replaced Food Services for Montgomery County in providing breakfasts and lunches in the schools. A new 24-hour telephone service with pre-recorded menu information and other items of interest can be reached by dialing 381-6169.

A light dessert has been added to the daily Type A lunch menu at the elementary schools. A la carte dessert items will be eliminated except for the ice cream, juice bars, sherbet cups and freezies on Fridays.

The price of school meals has increased for the first time in three years to 70 cents for breakfast, $1.10 for lunch at elementary schools and $1.20 for lunch at secondary schools. Monthly meal credits are available for five cents savings per breakfast and 10 cents savings per lunch. The savings over one school year is close to a free month of lunches. The special prices are available only to students buying a monthly meal credit. The credits must be purchased on or before the first day of a month.
