At an exploratory meeting in the Giles County Courthouse earlier this month, the Rev. Shahn Wilburn talked to 150 people about the need for an educational alternative in the county.
The church's school advisory board is proposing that a new school be managed by a board of community leaders from various denominations.
Some of the proposals for the new school are:
Children of all denominations, with or without handicaps, may apply for admission.
Pupils would be advanced on demonstrated academic success at each grade level.
The school would start with kindergarten through third grade and add a grade each year to eighth grade.
Classes initially would be held in Riverview Baptist Church.
Classes would not exceed 20 students.
Teaching personnel would be certified, and accreditation would be a three-year goal.
The school would offer a state-of-the-art computer network.
The proposed school is still in the developmental stage. Wilburn said the school would have a "commitment to an unalterably high standard of intellectual development." He also believes that "active and effective parental involvement is key to any school's success."
