Robin Tieken Hadley and John W.B. Hadley of Lloyd Harbor, Long Island, N.Y., made the contribution, which was announced Monday to guests attending Lee-Yardley Day, an annual event honoring present and former faculty at the school. The Hadley gift is designated for faculty support.
"The gift of the Hadleys is a most welcome launch into the school's centennial hour," Van Voorhis said. "It defines our hopes and ambitions for the start of Chatham Hall's second century."
The Hadleys were honored at a private dinner Sunday night at the school.
A member of the Chatham Hall class of 1957, Robin Tieken Hadley has been involved in the school's advancement programs as chairperson of the Rector's Circle, a member of the Alumnae Council, a volunteer in previous national campaigns and as current president of the Chatham Hall Board of Trustees.
She is a graduate of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and earned a master's degree in education from Loyola University of Chicago. She taught middle school mathematics at the Latin School in Chicago until 1981. She then taught at the Friends Academy in Locust Valley, N.Y., until 1986.
The $2.5 million gift is one of the largest ever made to a girls' preparatory school, Van Voorhis said.
