VIRGINIA FEDERAL GOES (SURPRISE!) TO CRESTAR

Virginia Federal Savings Bank, which was on course to become part of NationsBank Corp., instead will be acquired by Richmond-based Crestar Financial Corp., officials said.

Crestar said it agreed last week to pay about $52 million for Richmond-based Virginia Federal, which has $756 million in assets and 13 offices.

The deal was handled through a third banking company, MNC Financial Corp. of Baltimore. Virginia Federal has been a subsidiary of MNC for four years. NationsBank is to buy MNC next month and was expected to take over Virginia Federal as part of that transaction. - Associated Press
