HARBOTTLE LEADS SENIOR QUALIFYING

John Harbottle, a 62-year-old dentist from Tacoma, Wash., shot a 2-under-par 68 to lead after the first round of qualifying at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville.

Another round of stroke play is scheduled for today before the 160-player field is trimmed to the low 64 scorers for match play. Players must be 55 or older.

Harbottle, the runner-up in 1986, had missed qualifying for the championship the past four years, each time by one shot. "I'm thrilled to get back into the field this year," said Harbottle, who made three birdies to go along with a bogey on his final hole of the day.

Three shots behind Harbottle, at 1-over-par 71, is a group of seven players.

Defending champion Clarence Moore, 64, of Winnsboro, S.C., shot a 74. Two-time champion Bo Williams (1986 and 1989), 64, of Ocala, Fla., shot a 7.

In other golf:

Virginia Tech shot a 290 in the morning and a 286 in the afternoon for a par-576 total and fifth place after the first day of the 17-team Kiawah Island (S.C.) Intercollegiate Tournament.

Houston, the 16-time national champion, posted a tournament-record round of 273, 15 under par, in the morning round and added a 294 for a 9-under-par 567 total and the first-day lead. Six shots back is 17th-ranked Kent. East Tennessee State and UNC Charlotte are tied for third at 574. Florida State is sixth with a 577, Old Dominion is 10th at a 585 and Richmond is 12th at 590.

Houston got a course record of 65 from Eric Bockva, who added a 73 for a 138 total, four shots behind Florida State's Bobby Cochran, who shot two rounds of 67 for a 10-under par 134 total and the lead.

Sophomore Matt Martin of Radford shot rounds of 71 and 72 for a 143 total to lead Tech.

The final round is today on the par-72, 6,688-yard Osprey Point Golf Club course.

Brian Sharp, 72-72-144; Sean Farrell, 74-71-145; freshman David Havens, 73-73-146; freshman Curtis Deal, 80-71-151.

Individual medalist Doug Kenney shot a 76 to lead Cave Spring to victory in a Roanoke Valley District high school boys' match at Roanoke Country Club (par-71). The Knights had a team total of 316. Patrick Henry was five shots back at 321, followed by Franklin County (330), Pulaski County (355) and William Fleming (432).
