DENTIST MEDALIST AT SENIOR AMATEUR

John Harbottle, a 62-year-old dentist from Tacoma, Wash., shot his second 2-under-par 68 on Tuesday and won medalist honors by seven strokes in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

Harbottle was runner-up in the 1986 senior event and co-medalist in 1988, but he failed by one shot to qualify each of the past four years.

A distant second in the medalist chase was Robert Housen, 55, of Brielle, N.J., who shot a 70 for a two-round score of 143.

Ned Baber of Roanoke shot 75-73-148. The field of 160 was trimmed to 64 for match play, which begins today. - Associated Press
