PETERSBURG - A man shot a Prince George County woman in the parking lot of the Fort Lee golf course before killing himself Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the Army base said.
The shooting occurred about 7:45 a.m. as Linda J. McCollum, 20, was heading to work at the golf course's snack bar-pro shop complex, said Mari Eder, a base public affairs officer.
McCollum was taken to the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond where she underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the head, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The gunman died at the scene. His identity was not released. His body was taken to the Richmond medical examiner's office.
Eder said officials don't know what prompted the attack, but added that the victim and gunman knew each other.

Death penalty sought in developer's slaying
FAIRFAX - The state will seek the death penalty for a West Virginia man accused in the shooting death of a Northern Virginia builder, Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Horan said Tuesday.
A Fairfax County grand jury on Monday indicted Ralph N. Shambaugh Jr., 32, of Great Cacapon, W.Va., in the fatal shooting of real estate developer John Kowalczyk.
Kowalczyk was shot in the head while sitting in a truck in a Vienna parking lot June 10 after spending the evening with his 12-year-old son. He was waiting for his ex-wife to pick up the boy, who had just left the vehicle to throw away trash.
Kowalczyk's former in-laws - Stanley and Jacqueline Hyman - were at the center of the investigation into his slaying when they died in an apparent murder-suicide.
According to the indictment, Shambaugh conspired with Stanley Hyman to kill Kowalczyk.
