CANCER CENTER GETS ZONING OK

Pulaski Community Hospital is geared up for construction of a cancer treatment center if the state health commissioner approves the project.

Pulaski Town Council on Tuesday night approved a conditional-use permit allowing the hospital expansion.

"We already have our schematic drawings," Christopher Dux, the Pulaski hospital's chief executive officer, told council. The drawings had to be included with the application for state approval.

Radford Community Hospital also is seeking state authorization for a center.

Dux said construction could be under way within a month or so if state Health Commissioner Robert Stroube chooses the Pulaski project. But he said the decision probably will not be known until January or February.

"It is a service that's desperately needed in the New River Valley," Dux said. "We hope that we will be successful with our application before the state Board of Health but only time will tell."

In other business, council rescheduled its Oct. 19 meeting for Oct. 20 because the regular date conflicts with the Virginia Municipal League annual meeting.
