POLITICAL ADS RATE R FOR VIOLENCE

Concerned about violence on television? You might want to raise the issue with Democrat Mary Sue Terry and Republican George Allen the next time one of them comes through town.

The candidates for governor are adding to TV's diet of murder and mayhem in commercials airing across the state this week. In the process, they're sharpening attacks on each other's record on crime issues.

A new Allen ad, scheduled to begin appearing today, argues that as state attorney general, Terry "presided over the largest increase in violent crime in history."

Amid the sound of gunfire and footage showing an ambulance peeling down a darkened street and police aiding a gunshot victim, an announcer reminds viewers, "Rape is up, robbery is up and murder is up dramatically, too." A red arrow rises in the middle of the screen as each offense is mentioned, pointing toward a photo of Terry in one corner.

The Allen ad includes footage from a Terry commercial in which a photo of the GOP candidate can be seen through the hole left by a gunshot. That ad also showed Terry in a gun sight and suggested she had been targeted for defeat by the National Rifle Association.

Allen spokesman Ken Stroupe said the new commercial will be airing in all markets and will be mixed in with ads Allen put on the air last week.

The commercial is Allen's response to a Terry ad that began airing Monday, which in turn answered one of Allen's commercials from last week.

The latest Terry commercial notes Allen's complaint that Terry engaged in negative campaigning in a gun-control ad last week. The announcer urges, "Notice one thing he doesn't do: Answer the facts.

"Why is George Allen against one-gun-a-month and a five-day waiting period [for handgun purchases]? Why did Allen take over $40,000 in laundered contributions from the gun lobby?" the announcer asks.

Terry spokesman Jay Marlin said the ad is being integrated into Terry's schedule of commercials.
