BLACKSBURG EDGES NORTHSIDE

Northside roared back from a 15-point halftime deficit and Terri Craig hit a 3-pointer with seconds left to force overtime, but Blacksburg held on in three extra periods Tuesday night to defeat the hosts 62-59 in a non-district girls' basketball contest.

Meredith Braine scored 19 points to lead the Indians (6-1). Sarah Hicks, who led Northside (3-3) with 14 points, shook off early foul trouble and grabbed 11 of her 12 rebounds after intermission. Hicks' 3-point attempt to tie the score at the end of the third overtime was just long. The Vikings are 1-2 in overtime games this year.

MONETA - Hope Cook scored 43 points for the Generals, but the Golden Eagles sank several key foul shots in the last minute to soar to victory.

Courtney Hurd pulled down 18 rebounds and Kim English added 14 as Staunton River (5-0 overall and in the district) took an 11-point halftime lead. Cook, who had scored 11 points in the first half, kept her team alive in the second, but Tanya Nelms hit one foul shot and Deena Mitchell sank two in the last minute to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.

Four double-digit scorers gave Staunton River a balanced attack. Hurd led the team with 18 points, followed by Nelms with 17, English with 14 and Mitchell with 10.

Tiwale Pannell added 11 points for William Campbell (5-2, 5-2). \

Radford 44

RADFORD - Phenomenal free-throw shooting down the stretch by the Cavaliers spoiled the Bobcats' upset bid in a non-district game.

Lord Botetourt led 38-36 going to the final period, but the Cavaliers hit 19 consecutive shots from the line to pull away. The Cavs (7-1) sank 23 of 26 shots overall.

Ashley Moore led the way with 14 points and Sara Moore had 10 for Lord Botetourt, who is ranked second in Timesland. Jenny Gates grabbed 10 rebounds.

Winless Radford (0-8) was led by Charlee Taylor with 16 points, Jenny Bishop with 14 and Cathy Richardson with 13. Bishop also had six steals.

\ Rockbridge County 42

James River 40

LEXINGTON - Jennifer Vest and Jessica Austin scored 11 points each to lead the Wildcats to a non-district victory.

Rockbridge County trailed 21-17 at halftime, then took control by outscoring the Knights 16-6 in the third quarter.

Teresa Hickman led James River with 14 points and Angie Johnson added 10.

MONTEREY - Chrissy Robertson scored seven of her 21 points and the Rockets hit five of nine free throws as Craig County pulled away in the fourth quarter in the Pioneer District.

Bonnie Boardwine added 11 points for the Rockets. April Rexroade nailed a pair of 3-pointers for Highland (1-4 overall and in the district). \

Glenvar 57

Bath County 19

The Highlanders used their quickness to force numerous turnovers while building a 28-4 halftime lead and rolled to a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers.

Marlea Hale led Glenvar with 22 points, Heather Beveridge had 12 and Torree Morris added 10. The Highlanders held all Bath County scorers to single digits. \

BEDFORD - Freshman Sue Lynn Cowlbeck scored nine of her 18 points in the second quarter as Liberty rolled to a Seminole District victory over the Bees.

Amy Baxter had nine assists and sophomore Felicia Miller chipped in 11 points for Liberty (5-2 overall, 5-2 in the district). Kristy Fisher scored 13 for Brookville (5-2, 5-2). \
