BLACKSBURG EDGES NORTHSIDE

Northside roared back from a 15-point halftime deficit and Terri Craig hit a 3-pointer with seconds left to to force overtime, but Blacksburg held on in three extra periods Tuesday night to defeat the Vikings 62-59 in a non-district girls' basketball contest.

Meredith Braine scored 19 points to lead the Indians (6-1). Sarah Hicks, who led Northside (3-3) with 14 points, shook off early foul trouble and had 11 of her 12 rebounds after intermission. Hicks' 3-point attempt to tie the score at the end of the third overtime was just long. The Vikings are 1-2 in overtime games this year.

Radford 44

RADFORD - Phenomenal free-throw shooting down the stretch by the Cavaliers spoiled the Bobcats' upset bid in a non-district game.

Lord Botetourt led 38-36 going to the final period, but the Cavaliers hit 19 consecutive shots from the line to pull away. The Cavs (7-1) sank 23 of 26 shots overall.

Ashley Moore led the way with 14 points and Sara Moore had 10 for Lord Botetourt, who is ranked second in Timesland. Jenny Gates grabbed 10 rebounds.

Winless Radford (0-8) was led by Charlee Taylor with 16 points, Jenny Bishop with 14 and Cathy Richardson with 13. Bishop also had six steals.

FLOYD - Lynette Nolley scored her 1,000th career point as the Buffaloes overwhelmed the Blue Devils in a Mountain Empire District game.

Nolley's basket at the end of the third quarter gave her 16 points for the night and 1,001 in her career. The senior point guard sat out the fourth quarter as Floyd County (7-1, 5-0) played its reserves.

Melissa Cantrell added 15 points, including the Buffaloes' only three 3-pointers, and Monica Lucas had 10 points, five steals and four assists. Fourteen of the 15 Floyd players scored in the first half; the 15th was injured early in the game. Floyd hit 25 of 54 field-goal attempts in the first half and 21 of 33 in the second.

Grayson County, which trailed 33-9 after the opening quarter, had no player reach double figures. \

Narrows 39

The Eagles used a balanced offense to overpower the Green Wave in the Mountain Empire District.

Angie Simpkins and Lori Lyons scored 15 points each, and Sherry Smith and Rene Gardner added 11 apiece for Auburn.

Melinda Fleeman had a game-high 23 points for Narrows (1-4, 1-4). \

Julie Pickle and Nicole Huff scored 10 points each to lead the Scarlet Hurricane (4-2) past the Cavaliers (3-3) in non-district action. \

Shawsville 50

SHAWSVILLE - The Shawnees harassed Giles into 36 turnovers and 0-for-10 shooting in the third quarter to notch a Mountain Empire District victory.

Shawsville (3-3, 3-2) got 12 points apiece from Kelley Ryan, Brandy Alexander and Robin Burdette.

Debbie Snidow led Giles (1-5, 1-4) with 11 points. \

Highland 39

MONTEREY - Chrissy Robertson scored seven of her 21 points and the Rockets hit five of nine free throws as Craig County pulled away in the fourth quarter for the Pioneer District win.

Bonnie Boardwine added 11 points for the Rockets. April Rexroade nailed a pair of 3-pointers for Highland (1-4 overall, 1-4 in the district). \
