ESCAPEE WAIVES EXTRADITION

A North Carolina prison escapee suspected of raping a Montgomery County woman last week waived extradition from Montana on Tuesday.

Michael Hampton Sonner, 25, was captured Saturday when he stepped off a Greyhound bus in Butte, Mont.

The bus was bound for Washington state.

Sonner at first gave police a fictitious name, but was arrested without incident.

He had escaped from a work detail at the Davie County Landfill Recycling Center last week.

Sonner was serving time for breaking and entering convictions.

Police began searching for him in West Virginia after the truck of an eastern Montgomery County woman he is suspected of raping was found in Bluefield. Sonner is charged with raping the woman at her home, stealing her truck and forcing her to drive to a Blacksburg bank to withdraw $1,000 and give it to him.

North Carolina authorities are planning to return Sonner to their state to face escape and breaking and entering charges there.

After that, he would be brought to Montgomery County to face charges of rape, robbery, abduction and grand larceny.
