DUSTY TOMES

I WANT to commend your paper for the excellent and timely series on the state of the administration and management of Virginia's publicly supported colleges and universities. You have performed a real service to the

taxpayers and their representatives in exposing the waste and abuse. (Should I also use the word fraud? How else to describe the work of a professor who spends only eight hours a week in classroom teaching for a salary of $125,000 per year?)

Most members of the public respect the value of research, but what the public perhaps doesn't realize is that a great deal, maybe most, of what passes as research in our universities never makes it beyond the dusty shelves used to store obscure professional or scientific journals. These publications are the coin of the realm in the university community.
