Express president John Gagnon said the East Coast Hockey League team will provide between $12,000 to $16,000 to the youth hockey organization. In exchange, parents of the youth hockey players will serve as ushers and office officials for Express home games at the Roanoke Civic Center.
The Roanoke Valley Youth Hockey Association has more than 250 participants and will hold its games at the Roanoke building this season. The civic center will also reserve ice time for collegiate and Adult League teams as well as figure skating.
"This agreement brings a renewed excitement in hockey for the kids," said Andre Savard, a Youth Hockey Association board member. "We didn't get any support for the team last year and this shows that the Express is taking hockey seriously. The best way to get people in the Roanoke Valley involved with the team is to start with the kids."
The Youth Hockey Association will hold registration for the 1993-94 season on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 12-2 p.m. at the civic center. Boys and girls ages 5-17 are invited to attend.
For more registration information, contact Judy Oliver at (703) 343-5830.
