DEFENDING CHAMP OUSTED IN SENIOR AMATEUR PLAY

Bob Hullender, a retired Air Force general from San Antonio, defeated defending champion Clarence Moore of Winnsboro, S.C., 4 and 3 Wednesday in a first-round match in the U.S. Senior Amateur golf tournament.

Roanoker Ned Baber's first trip to the tournament ended with a 4 and 2 loss to James Keim of Erie, Pa., at Farmington Country Club.

Baber, 56, had shot rounds of 75-73 on Monday and Tuesday to qualify for the low 64 and match play in the 160-player field.

Among the other players winning matches on Wednesday were 1990 champion Jackie Cummings of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and four former runners-up, including medalist John Harbottle of Tacoma, Wash., who birdied the fifth extra hole to defeat Wendell Kop of Honolulu 1-up. Harbottle was second in the 1986 tournament.

Also advancing were Morris Beecroft of Newport News, James Kite of Wolftown and Bob Clark, of Asheville, N.C.

Beecroft, the 1991 runner-up, won the final two holes to beat Jerry Ellis of Norman, Okla., 1-up. Kite, the 1987 runner-up, parred the second extra hole to get by Bink Mitchella of Dallas, and Clark, the 1990 runner-up, beat Dick Pride of Tuscaloosa, Ala., 3 and 2.

Thirty-two golfers advanced to the second round of match play. Two more rounds were scheduled today. The championship continues through Saturday.
