SCULPTOR SPEAKS AT ROANOKE COLLEGE|

Internationally renowned sculptor Alice Aycock will be the guest speaker in Roanoke College's Convocation Series today. She will speak in the Sutton Student Center Ballroom about her outdoor sculpture, "Solar Wind," at 11:20 a.m. From 7-8 p.m., Aycock will lecture in the Olin Gallery on her latest work. Her talk will take place during a reception for the artists who are exhibiting in the galleries, which is from 6-9 p.m.

Aycock's works are displayed in the "Inside and Out: Nevelson, Aycock and Armajani" exhibit, which runs through Oct. 29.

"Solar Wind," located at the Life Science Plaza on the college campus, is a 31-foot structure. Completed in 1983, the work is from a series of "blade machines," which grew out of her interest in linking modern technology with the past. Aycock, who teaches at Yale University, said, "I was searching for a kind of primitive image that would have all the power of what technology means, but also refer back in time."
