FCC LAUNCHES WIRELESS RACE

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday threw open the door to a new generation of communications services that technology experts say could transform the way people communicate much as the invention of the telephone did more than a century ago.

The commission in a 2-1 vote decided to divide each new "personal communications services" market into large and small blocks of radio frequencies, allowing the possibility that very large systems and small ones with less range could be created.

The FCC also began considering rules for auctioning the thousands of PCS licenses that will be available. It is expected the government will raise $10 billion through the auction process. - Washington Post
