LIBRARY MUST GET WORKERS TO AID TEENS

City Council is set to consider a proposal Monday to hire two part-time employees to help handle adolescents who hang out at the public library after school mainly to socialize.

The plan from the local chapter of CADRE _ the Commonwealth Alliance for Drug Rehabilitation and Education _ is on the council's agenda for its regular meeting Monday night.

In August, CADRE proposed that the city hire additional staff at both the library and at the Recreation Building across the street to help regular employees deal with 50 to 60 students who have no place to go after school.

CADRE President Betty Jones estimated the cost of the additional personnel at close to $7,000.

Since then, the Radford Recreation Department has arranged for Radford University students to supervise and provide activities for the after-school crowd at the Recreation Building.

The college students will earn credit for their work, which is being coordinated through the university's Service Learning Program. It runs through the end of the year.

The Recreation Department also has installed two video arcade games on a commission basis for the youngsters to use.

In another matter, council will consider spending $232,228 to buy a new fire truck with money from the Fire Department's restricted fund.

In other business, council will decide whether to:

Consider city participation in a federally funded police-hiring supplement program.

Appoint two members to the New River Regional Jail Advisory Board.

Approve a change order for the Radford Public Library addition construction project.

Adopt a revised comprehensive plan.

Approve a contract for voting machines.

City Council will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers of the Municipal Building, 619 Second St.
