Janet Tuckwiller, a Newport resident, was chosen by the county supervisors Wednesday night. They had interviewed a half-dozen candidates since Kenneth Weaver left the position in June.
"These are exciting and challenging times," Tuckwiller said, "and I look forward to doing everything I can to improve on previous efforts and make a difference in the county."
Tuckwiller graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in economics. She also has advanced degrees in adult continuing education and education administration.
She has worked as an extension agent with the College of Human Resources at Virginia Tech. Also, she has been a resource development specialist at Tech and was a program director for the Extension Service in a Western Virginia district that included 19 counties and two cities.
For the past year, she said, she has been business director for her husband, Robert Tuckwiller, whose landscape paintings sell widely in Western Virginia.
They have two children.
The new county administrator, a native of nearby Monroe County, W.Va., will assume her responsibilities Monday.
