VA. SCHOOLS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST

Washington and Lee University is ranked among the nation's top 25 liberal arts colleges in U.S. News & World Report's 1994 edition of "America's Best Colleges."

It is the seventh consecutive year that W&L, a private liberal arts school in Lexington, has been ranked in the top 25.

For the past two years, W&L has ranked 22nd.

Topping the national liberal arts list is Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Other ranked Virginia schools include James Madison University in Harrisonburg, which is listed 13th among universities of the Southern region.

University of Richmond ranks second, while Hampton University ranks 14th.

Mary Baldwin College in Staunton is ranked ninth in liberal arts colleges of the Southern region.

The University of Virginia is ranked 21st on the list of best national universities. Harvard University tops the list, followed by Princeton University.

Roanoke College is ranked sixth among Southern liberal arts colleges in the category of academic reputation.

The 1,371 four-year schools included in the study are ranked according to a system that combined statistical data with the results of a U.S. News & World Report survey of academic reputations among 2,655 college presidents, deans and admissions directors.

The schools are divided into categories using guidelines established by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The magazine's annual report on "America's Best Colleges" will appear on newsstands Monday.
