NS helps out CSX in its time of need

Norfolk Southern Corp. is helping CSX move its trains in the wake of Wednesday morning's Amtrak accident on a CSX track north of Mobile, Ala.

Forty-four people were killed when the Sunset Limited, an Amtrak train traveling between Los Angeles and Miami, hurtled off a railroad bridge into a swampy waterway. A barge may have struck the bridge, causing the accident.

While the Amtrak cars are retrieved from the bayou and the bridge is repaired, 10 CSX trains per day are detouring over NS track between Mobile and Birmingham, Ala., and Atlanta and New Orleans. Another four trains per day of the Burlington Northern Railroad are being detoured on NS track between Mobile and Kimbrough, Ala. Bridge repairs are expected to take eight days.

Salem Ben Franklin to close up, for good

The Ben Franklin variety store on Main Street in downtown Salem will close in November because the owner, Jesse S. Ramsey, plans to retire.

Ramsey, who has operated the Salem store since 1981, said he's made no effort to sell the franchise because the Ben Franklin parent company, National Intergroup of Pittsburgh, is phasing out small stores such as the one in Salem. The company's newer stores are larger and most are in shopping centers.
