S. RIVER HANDED 1ST LOSS

Nelson County rallied in the final quarter to hand Staunton River, Timesland's fifth-ranked girls' basketball team, its first loss in a Seminole District game Thursday.

The Golden Eagles (5-1 overall and 5-1 in the district) missed three one-and-ones while committing turnovers as Nelson County owned a 13-5 edge in the final quarter.

Kim English hit a game-high 16 points for Staunton River while Martha Crawford led a balanced attack for Nelson County (6-1, 6-1), which took over the district lead by a half game. \

Rural Retreat 60

Grayson County 24

INDEPENDENCE - Beth Ketner scored 13 points and Rachel Arnold added 10 as the Indians pounded the Blue Devils in a non-district contest.

Rural Retreat (7-1) took a 16-0 lead in the first quarter and led throughout.

Grayson County (1-5) had no scorers in double digits. \

Fort Chiswell 28

FLOYD - The Buffaloes cruised to a 52-12 halftime lead and crushed the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game. Floyd County (8-1, 6-0), the fourth-ranked team in Timeland, was led by Lynette Nolley's 15 points and Leigh-Ann Pursifull's 14 points. Twelve players scored for the Buffaloes.

CHRISTIANSBURG - Rebecca McNeil ripped the Mountaineers for 28 points as the Blue Demons won in a non-district game. Christiansburg (2-3) led 34-31 after three quarters, then poured in 26 points in the fourth. Andrea Moore led Alleghany with 21 points. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 63

GRETNA - Yvonne Hall had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cavaliers to a Piedmont District victory.

Fieldale-Collinsville (3-3) bolted to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and never was threatened. Cicely Becker added 16 points and T.J. Hayes had 14 for the winners. \

Tygart's Valley (W.Va.) 74

Highland 46

TYGARTS VALLEY - Shana Louk and Sparky Arborgast scored 16 points each as Tygart's Valley whipped the visiting Rams in a non-district game. Tygart's Valley used a 25-point third quarter to dismiss any chance Highland (1-5) had of making a comeback. Missy Lightner led the Rams with 13 points. \

RINGGOLD - Ten players scored as the visiting Warriors whipped Dan River in a Piedmont District clash. Magna Vista (8-1, 5-1) was led by Kristy Wilkens' 12 points, and Angie Morton's 10 points and six steals. The Warriors jumped to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and widened the lead from there. \
