McMurtrey, a golf manufacturing representative who is playing in his seventh consecutive Senior Amateur, also reached the semifinals in 1988. The other three quarterfinal winners were all 55 and playing in their first Senior Amateur.
They were Jerry Nelson of Warsaw, Ind.; Robert Housen of Brielle, N.J., and Joe Ungvary of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Nelson defeated Dick Sucher, 56, of Mequon, Wis., 2 up. Housen, the New Jersey State Amateur champion, beat 62-year-old Ray Hibler, of El Paso, Texas, 1-up. And Ungvary sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole to close out James Keim, of Erie, Pa., after losing a 1-up lead with a bogey at the 18th hole.
