For the next three months, long traffic delays can be expected on Hollins Road because of the installation of water lines.
The work will affect traffic on a two-mile stretch between Orange Avenue and the Hollins Road bridge near the Singer Furniture plant.
City officials advise motorists to avoid the area if possible.
"We strongly encourage motorists to use alternative routes, such as Plantation Road, over the next three months," said Traffic Engineer Bob Bengtson.
The work is part of the city's $30 million project to expand the Carvins Cove water treatment plant and install new distribution lines from the water filtration plant to an area near Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The Hollins Road work will begin Tuesday. It is expected to be finished by the end of December.
Traffic will be limited to one lane, with a flagman stopping traffic in one direction at a time.
Construction will take place on approximately one-tenth of a mile at a time, beginning at the Hollins Road bridge and moving southward to Orange Avenue.
