IN SPORTS - HOCKEY

Erin Whitten will become the second woman to play in a professional hockey game when she suits up tonight for the Adirondack Red Wings of the American Hockey League.

The 21-year-old goaltender will play at least one period in a preseason game against the Cornwall Aces at the Glens Falls Civic Center, Red Wings coach Newell Brown said.

Whitten, a Glens Falls native, played four years of women's hockey at the University of New Hampshire, where she compiled a 51-14-4 record, 2.40 goals against average and .910 save percentage in 72 games. She also played with the U.S. Women's National Team in 1992.

Whitten hopes to land a contract with a team in the East Coast Hockey League.
