SMITH: VHSL MAY LIGHTEN TRIO'S PENALTY

Steve Smith, the Oak Hill Academy boys' basketball coach, said he spoke Friday with Virginia High School League programs supervisor Ken Tilley and was given some hope that the VHSL would take a second look at the eligibility of three Warriors players.

Tilley said Thursday that the VHSL would allow George Washington High School of Danville and Virginia High School of Bristol to play non-VHSL member Oak Hill if Curtis Staples, Alex Sanders and Mark Blount were not in uniform.

"I talked to Mr. Tilley earlier this afternoon and asked if he would reconsider our situation because it didn't look like much was going on with the other states," Smith said Friday. "He said he would be willing to look into the matter further at a meeting Oct. 20."

The Oak Hill standouts were among 37 players from 19 states who attended the Career Developmental Weekend and Fab 40 Shootout from Sept. 11-12 in Beaverton, Ore., and received a $100 gift certificate to be redeemed at the Nike employee store, an apparent violation of VHSL guidelines.
