PARRY MCCLUER SURVIVES

Parry McCluer never led until it counted.

John Wheeler scored on a 22-yard run with 1 minute, 11 seconds remaining as the Fighting Blues edged Rockbridge County 19-14 on Friday in a battle of non-district rivals.

Parry McCluer (3-1) outgained the Wildcats 290-197 in total offense, but the Wildcats held a 14-13 lead without the benefit of a touchdown scored from scrimmage. Kenny Lewis returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for Rockbridge's first touchdown, and Marty Early returned a fumble 23 yards to put Rockbridge on top 14-7 in the third quarter.

Parry McCluer failed on an attempt to run for two points following first touchdown, an 11-yard run in the third quarter, but the Fighting Blues could not be denied in the end. Rockbridge (2-2) had stopped Parry McCluer deep in Wildcats' territory twice in the first half.

Sham Wheeler scored Parry McCluer's first touchdown on a 7-yard run in the second quarter and finished with 85 yards on 14 carries. John Wheeler had 113 yards on 26 attempts. \

Alleghany 10

Covington 3

COVINGTON - The Mountaineers' high-flying offense, which came in averaging almost 40 points per game, was held in check by the Cougars, but the eighth-ranked team in Timesland held on for a non-district victory.

Alleghany linebacker Brian O'Conner intercepted a Corey Hunter pass at the Mountaineers' 5-yard line with 30 seconds remaining to end Covington's upset bid.

David Cummings scored the only touchdown of the game for Alleghany (4-0), a 16-yard run in the third quarter. He ran for 106 yards, 3 yards more than Covington (0-3) had in total offense. \

Bath County 38

Franklin, W.Va. 7

FRANKLIN, W.Va - The Chargers ran host Franklin into the ground - literally.

Bath County rushed for 559 yards on their way to a 31-point blowout. Billy Thomas rushed for 138 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries to lead the ground assault for Bath County (3-0).

Franklin (0-5) was held to 35 yards rushing. \

Lord Botetourt 36

Craig County 19

NEW CASTLE - In a game in which the most dangerous thing to do was kick off, Lord Botetourt survived a big first quarter by Craig County to beat the winless Rockets in a non-district game.

Lord Botetourt (4-0) rushed for 293 yards and got two big-play touchdowns to take the lead for good in the second quarter.

Three kickoffs were returned for touchdowns, two by Craig County's Kris Peters. The first came on the opening kickoff and covered 84 yards; the second, an 87-yarder, followed a 6-yard scoring run by Lord Botetourt's Darin Harris. It put Craig County up 12-7 with 6:23 left in the first quarter.

Peters also scored on a 7-yard pass from Robbie Huffman with 6:05 left in the first quarter after Johnny Crawford returned an interception 18 yards to the Cavaliers' 7.

But Botetourt's Chris Deweese returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to cut Craig County's lead to 19-14 with 5:51 left in the first quarter.

Then, with 7:36 left in the half, Deweese threw to Tim O'Quinn for a 42-yard touchdown, and Deweese's two-point conversion made it 22-19 Botetourt.

The Cavaliers had four turnovers but held Craig County (0-4) to 32 yards rushing and four first downs.

Peters totaled 239 yards on five kickoff returns. Rocky Lark led Botetourt with 94 rushing yards. \
