Wayne and Bobbie Holden have opened the store on Jefferson Street. It is one of the latest additions to Pulaski's growing downtown business scene, replacing a photo shop that closed after a few months.
Wayne, who comes from Bristol, where racing enthusiasts abound, and Bobbie, a Pulaski native, met when she worked at an area restaurant. They have been married for about two years.
He works at Bond Cote of Virginia and she at the Renfro Corp. plant, both in Pulaski, so they take turns operating their New River Models store when one of them is not at the regular job.
The model shop hours are noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Bobbie Holden said there are plans to extend those hours, particularly for holidays and perhaps some Sundays.
"We're NASCAR racing fans," she said. "We'd been looking around and trying to find a place."
They found Pulaski Main Street Executive Director Roscoe Cox, who quickly got them located in downtown Pulaski. "He's a real big help for Main Street," she said.
She is quick to point out that the store offers other kinds of models besides racing cars.
"We didn't want people to think we were just going to be NASCAR," she said. "A lot of people are into regular models also."
The couple likes to shop for models and collect them. Wayne has been assembling and painting models for years. "He builds every chance he gets," his wife said.
What about her? "I don't put any models together," she admitted. "I don't have the patience for it."
