GEORGE WYTHE RIPS RURAL RETREAT

George Wythe spotted Rural Retreat a first-quarter lead, then blew open the game between the Hogoheegee District's top two teams with six consecutive touchdowns en route to a 43-15 high school football victory Friday night.

Chris Dickinson scored on runs of 7 and 4 yards as Wythe (3-0 overall, 2-0 in the district) ran for 360 of its 390 total yards.

Rural Retreat (3-1, 1-1) led 7-0 lead after Kevin Burton scored on a 2-yard run after recovering a fumble at the Maroons' 20.

Dickinson's first touchdown made it 7-6 Rural Retreat, and Randy Blevins' 16-yard run and a two-point conversion put Wythe on top 14-7. Robert Dillow, Tony Callahan and Matt Sark added touchdowns as the Maroons dominated.

Each team lost four fumbles. Rural Retreat had 116 yards total offense, 80 on the ground.

Dickinson had 75 yards rushing and Blevin 69 for the Maroons. \

Patrick County 35

Bassett 26

BASSETT - Charles McClain rushed 26 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars (3-0, 2-0) beat the Bengals (1-2, 0-2) for a Piedmont District victory. Bassett also had a big offensive game. Quarterback Chris Harrison completed 15 of 22 passes for 203 yards, including eight to Tyree Hairston for 152 yards and a touchdown, and running back Darryle Hand had 21 carries for 117 yards and three touchdowns, including one for 34 yards. \

Martinsville 34

Laurel Park 0

MARTINSVILLE - A freshman finally earned a start in the Bulldogs' backfield, and he made the most of it. Running back Manti Venable rushed for 193 yards and touchdowns of 23, 43 and 3 yards as Martinsville (3-0, 2-0) pounded the turnover-prone Lancers (2-1, 1-1) in a Piedmont District game.

"We knew he has lot of potential and could be a tremendous player down the road," said Taylor Edwards, who is in his 12th season as Martinsville coach. "He's the first true freshman to start for me, and we had Shawn Moore and Nikki Fisher [who each went on to star at the University of Virginia]."

Edwards said the defense also stood out, and he singled out middle linebacker Chris Frith.

Martinsville had 237 rushing yards, compared with 58 by Laurel Park. The Lancers had four passes intercepted and lost two fumbles. Martinsville lost its only fumble. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 28

Gretna 6

GRETNA - Mancino Craighead rushed for 66 yards and three touchdowns on six carries as the Cavaliers routed the host Hawks in a Piedmont District game. Fieldale-Collinsville (1-2, 1-1) led 16-0 at halftime. Gretna (0-3, 0-2) closed to 16-6 in the third quarter, but Craighead scored two touchdowns to widen the Cavaliers' lead. \

Chatham 21

RIDGEWAY - Evan Penn scored two touchdowns on offense and one on defense and the Warriors (3-0, 2-0) overcame a 21-14 first-half deficit to defeat the Cavaliers (1-2, 0-2) in a Piedmont District game. Penn scored twice on 4-yard runs, and he returned a fumble 43 yards in the second quarter. Penn also kicked three extra points and ran for a two-point conversion. Rodney Redd rushed for 123 yards on 13 carries for Magna Vista, which had 218 yards rushing and 26 passing. Chatham had 201 rushing yards and 30 passing. Maurice Chalmers had 11 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. \

Rustburg 47

Staunton River 14

MONETA - After a 4-yard touchdown run by Jay Richards with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles (3-0, 3-0) trailed Rustburg 7-6. Before they scored again, the Red Devils (4-0, 4-0) had 40 points on the way to a Seminole District victory. Rustburg rushed for 331 yards on 27 attempts, including four touchdown runs of 35 yards or more. Morgan Warrick had touchdown runs of 54, 35 and 4 yards, and he added a two-point conversion. Staunton River lost four fumbles but rushed for 279 yards and had 314 yards in total offense to Rustburg's 330.
