ROADWATCH

Highway and street projects scheduled this week by area localities and the Virginia Department of Transportation:\ ROANOKE\ Fifth Street Bridge Construction - A new four-lane bridge is being built between Salem and Gilmer avenue over Norfolk Southern Corp. tracks. The existing bridge will be closed until next summer.\ \ ROANOKE COUNTY\ U.S. 220 signal at Hunting Hills shopping center - The traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. 220 and Crossbow Circle is not operating fully. Motorists should use alternate routes during peak hours as delays are expected.\ \ U.S. 11/460 bridge - At the Montgomery County line, the bridge over the Roanoke River and Norfolk Southern Corp. tracks is under repair. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the westbound lane while repairs are being performed on the eastbound side. Speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited. Work to replace the bridge's deck will last until spring.\ \ Hunting Hills subdivision improvements - Work is being done on Virginia routes 1285, 1290, 1291, 1292, 1293, 1294 and 1943 on new drainage facilities, grading and new surfaces. Work is expected to last until spring.\ \ Hunting Hills subdivision road closure - Crossbow Circle from Route 220 to Chuckar Drive will be closed on Wed., Sept. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Motorists should use Starkey Drive or Hunting Hills Drive.\ \ Line Painting on I-81 - Line painting on the northbound lane at exits 141 (Rt. 419) and 143 (Rt. 581) this week will cause temporary lane closures.\ \ BOTETOURT COUNTY\ Virginia 605 reconstruction - In Cloverdale, about 1.4 miles of the road - between Virginia 601 in Roanoke County and Virginia 654 in Botetourt County - is being repaved. A one-lane bridge will be replaced with a box culvert. Work is expected to last until spring.\ \ Virginia 642 reconstruction - Near Buchanan, 2.2 miles of Route 642 from Routes 11 to 638 is being reconstructed. Work will continue until late spring. \ BEDFORD\ Virginia 122 reconstruction - About 0.4 mile, from a half mile north of the intersection of Orange Street to Longwood Avenue, of the road will be repaved, and new traffic signals will be installed. Work will continue through the end of the year.\ \ BEDFORD COUNTY\ Virginia 43 bridge weight limit reduction - The weight limit for the bridge on northbound Virginia 43, about 6.1 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, has been lowered from 14 tons to 10 tons, while repairs are being made.\ Virginia 221 Widening in Forest - From Forest to Lynchburg, the road is being widened from two lanes to five. A stoplight at Enterprise Road is not in use. Drivers should watch for stop signs. Work will be completed in December.\ Virginia 749 Road Closed Temporarily - Route 749 near Chamblissburg, between Routes 24 and 746, is closed to rebuild a bridge. Motorists should use alternate routes. Work should be completed in December.\ \ MONTGOMERY COUNTY\ Interstate 81 Paving - The northbound lane of I-81 from Exit 109 (Route 177) to Exit 114 (Route 8) is being resurfaced. Motorists should expect delays.\ \ FRANKLIN COUNTY\ Virginia 40 shoulder widening - From Rocky Mount's west city limits for 3 miles west, traffic will be one way during widening of the shoulder of the road. The work will last about one week.\ \ Virginia 220 shoulder wedging - Only one northbound lane on Route 220 north from Henry County line to 5 miles north of Rocky Mount will be open due to shoulder wedging. Work will last about one week.\ \ MONTGOMERY COUNTY\ Interstate 81 paving - The northbound lanes of I-81 - from Exit 109 (Virginia 177) to Exit 114 (Virginia 8) are being repaved. Motorists should expect some delays.
