DONNA ANDREWS ONLY TWO SHOTS OFF LEAD

Donna Andrews is in position to win her second LPGA tournament in three weeks.

Andrews, of Lynchburg, Va., shot a 4-under-par 68 Saturday and is only two shots behind leader Kris Monaghan after three rounds of the LPGA Kyocera Inamori Classic in San Diego.

Monaghan, whose only tour victory was in this tournament in 1990, shot a 3-under 69 Saturday and leads Hall of Famer Patty Sheehan by one shot.

Monaghan, who was tied for the lead after the first two rounds, takes a 12-under 204 total into the final round over the 6,200-yard Stardust Country Club course, which is playing host to its first LPGA tournament since 1974.

Sheehan, who shared the lead with Monaghan and Gail Graham after two rounds, had a 70. Andrews, tied with Monaghan for the lead after 18 holes, and Juli Inkster are at 206.

Monaghan had a steady round, going to 11-under with three birdies and one bogey on the front nine.

She made a 15-foot putt to birdie the par-4 15th to go 12-under, but drove into the trees on the left side of the 16th fairway and took a bogey-5. She missed a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-4 17th, but hit a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-3 18th.

Monaghan missed the cut five times in her first nine tournaments this year, but has finished in the top 10 five times in her previous seven tournaments.

Sheehan has won this tournament three times, most recently in 1986.

Andrews was slowed by a back ailment Friday and shot a 72, but came back Saturday with three birdies on the back nine, including an 18-foot putt on 17.
