ROANOKE TEAMS SPLIT TENNIS MATCHES AT USTA

In Virginia Beach, the Roanoke 3.5 level women's team split two matches, and the Roanoke 4.0 women's team went 2-1 on Saturday in the United States Tennis Association sectional championships.

The 3.5 Roanoke team beat Northern Virginia 3-0, as the teams of Nancy Simmons and Pat Myers; Peggy Daniel and Judy Phillips; and Linda Wilkes and Lib Payne all won in two sets. Then, the 3.5 team lost 3-0 to Shenandoah.

The 4.0 Roanoke team beat Shenandoah 2-1 with victories from Margaret Grayson and Nancy Revercomb; and Vicki Freeman and Carol Osbourne. Anne Arundel then fell to Roanoke 2-1. Grayson and Revercomb; and Ginny Mueller and Carol Firestone won matches.

The Roanoke 4.0 team lost, however, 2-1 to Richmond. Grayson and Rivercomb scored the only win for Roanoke in the match.

Christiansburg won the boys and girls cross country titles in the Marion Invitational tournament. The boy's team beat Science Hill by 42 points for the A division title, and was led by Kevin Nolan and Jermemy Cosgriff, who finished second and third, respectively, on the 2.9 mile course. Matthew Repass of Patrick Henry-Glade won the boy's B division by two seconds over George Wythe's Jason Alexander with a time of 15:28.

Bethany Eigel's second-place finish led the Christiansburg girl's team to an 18-point win over Sullivan Central. Four girls finished in the top 10 for the Blue Demons.

Races at the Franklin County Speedway were rained out Saturday night, but racing will resume today. Gates will open at 12 p.m., and racing will resume at 3 p.m.

Cave Spring won the boys and girls cross country titles in the Blue Ridge Invitational at William Byrd High School on Saturday. The boy's team won the A division by 42 points over Salem, and was paced by Jason Dowdy and Cory Ring, who finished first and third, respectively.

Dowdy, who finished the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 34 seconds, won by seven seconds over Covington's Chris Merrell. Northside won the B division by four points over Brookville. Brent Carter of Athens, W.Va., posted a winning time of 15:52.

The Knights won the girl's title by 23 points over Brookville, and were led by Claire Rotramel's third-place finish. Brookville's April Clark won the girl's competition with a time of 19:08.
